King, Prime Minister William MacKenzie

King, Prime Minister William MacKenzie
1874–1950
King was the Liberal Party Prime Minister of Canada throughout the war. King was elected in 1940 with a huge majority. He soon decided to win over the Canadians to war gradually and in this he was successful. By April 1942, he initiated and passed a measure to allow conscription. King liked to play the intermediary between President ROOSEVELT and Prime Minister CHURCHILL and he was the host at two conferences in Quebec in August 1943 and in September 1944. Towards the end of 1944 he faced a crisis because of the rising number of Canadian casualties but he resolved this by getting his Defense Minister to resign.
